A new maths club is being formed at Sutton School which is open to children in Years 2, 3 and 4. Each child has the opportunity to become a member of this club by showing a good speedy understanding of their times tables. Each week they will try to complete 30 times tables questions in 5 minutes and when they achieve 30 out of 30 they will become a member of the club.
There are different levels of entry into the club: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze is for Year 2s only and it is based on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, Silver is 3, 4 and 6 whilst Gold is all tables, each level is using both multiplication and division. Members of the club will receive certificates in Celebration Assembly and be invited to a half termly afternoon of Maths games and challenges run by Mrs Whitfield.
We are delighted to announce that after the first week we had some excellent scores and have our first members: Tom, Amrita and Arthur have become Silver members. Congratulations to you three and we look forward to others joining them.
The belief is that children who have a strong grasp of their times tables are more confident when learning new mathematical concepts. Membership of this club is based on speed of recall of the times tables, therefore it would be really beneficial for your child if you could support their learning of tables at home.
How to become a member
All children in Years 2, 3 and 4 have an opportunity to become a member of Club 30. Each week they are given 30 multiplication and division problems to solve within 5 minutes. If they get 100% then they become a member. We do cover multiplication and division regularly in our Maths lessons, but in order to gain the quick mental calculations the children do need to practise at home.
Bronze members – 2, 5, 10 times tables
Silver members – 3, 4, 6 times tables
Gold – all tables (up to 12)
The weekly scores show that many children are practising as there are some improvements each week and a number of children are so close to becoming members.
Club 30 looks forward to welcoming new members in the Spring Term.
